5 predictions for Games UX in 2011
2010 was a great year for usability and user experience in games. As a growing industry, recognition and understanding of what UX means to games has grown many-fold. But 2011 is going to be even better.
I thought it would be fun, based on the trends seen towards the end of last year, to start the new year by giving some predictions as to what will happen within the field of games UX in 2011. Next year, we can see how I did!

Usability Fail – Lotus Notes
Lotus notes has many usability issues (or ‘features’ as they’re called). One of the most annoying is below:
Accidentally click ‘request more details’ in Lotus Notes? Bad luck, as you now have to send the request.
Here are the options presented to you if you try and exit.
(Note that the dialog box appears when you click the ‘x’ in the top corner to close the window)
None of these options allow you to exit without sending the request for more information. Maybe they should have actually tested with users?
Usability Thoughts – Mass Effect
In keeping with my goal of playing popular games 2 years after everyone else, I’ve recently played through the space-action-RPG epic Mass Effect. Despite being really fun, and deserving of its 8/10 score in Eurogamer, there are some serious usability flaws in the game. Most notable of which, and the one I had the most continued trouble with, was the Galaxy Map.

Amazon understands its customers
Twice this week, I’ve had to discuss the success of Amazon. In my opinion, it’s not due to their content, but rather their successful application of usability and user centred design. Today I’ll be looking at how Amazon has applied user experience principles to build upon their early success and stay competitive in the marketplace.
